Chapter Twelve: Letâs Pretend
Melissa
So it wasnât a dream then.
I had been almost convinced that it must be, earlier. The searing Florida heat and my own recent thoughts about Adriano Mancini might have combined to produce a hallucination. That he might follow me to another state, catch me as I swooned, and then, later on, kiss me awake.
No, this man was no Disney fairytale prince. He was too raw and real to play that role. The haughty, ruthless businessman came to the forefront almost immediately when he realized we had very different goals for the resort weâd come to visit.
If only he hadnât kissed me again, I might still hate him...
I couldnât now. Adriano had his face buried in my neck. I was totally naked, and he was on top of me.
As a matter of fact, he was still inside me. This was the wrong time to try and remember why thinking about him in the first place was such a bad idea. It felt like the best thing that had happened to me in so many years.
I shifted a little bit, trying to get comfortable under his weight. He levered himself up on his elbows almost at once. Heâd done this before, I remembered hazily. When we were kissing initially, I didnât have to fight him off to get him to stop. He just wouldnât force a woman, ever, and I somehow knew that without asking.
I was sure there was tenderness apparent in my eyes as I looked up at him. He looked adorably ruffled and sleepy. First time Iâd seen him with a hair out of place.
He touched my face. âAre you all right? I didnât hurt you?â
I smiled up at him wryly, stretching muscles left unused for far too long. âNo. No, well, slightly. But only in a good way.â
Something about that made his eyes darken.
I wasnât sure if it was regret or pleasure. I wished I knew how to read him.
Too late. He was already withdrawing, physically as well as with eye contact.
I had no option but to scoot backwards and try to pull the bed sheet over my naked body.
Adriano had turned away and was adjusting his clothes as if he did this all the time, no big deal. âI think I tore your clothes,â he said over his shoulder. âIâll leave while you get something else from your bag.â
I giggled.
He turned back around with a look of surprise on his perfectly chiseled face.
God, every part of him was perfect. His whole body looked like a sculpture by Michelangelo, a poem to masculinity.
I shrugged, knowing the sheet was doing the bare minimum to cover up my naked shoulders and breasts. âIâve been married and I have a child, Adriano. Iâm really not so bothered anymore about modesty after sex.â
He arched one killingly elegant eyebrow. âYou used my first name.â
I shifted under the sheets. Trust a man to make a big deal about emotional intimacy, even after joining himself physically to a woman. Still. He did look very cute, with those few little dark curls out of place.
